| What are the SAT Subject Tests and What Do I Need to Know About Them? | | |
SAT Subject Tests (formerly known as SAT II's) are one-hour,
multiple-choice exams that are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in
particular subject areas. The College Board offers 20 Subject Tests that fall
into 5 categories: English, history, mathematics, science and languages. Here is a full listing:
- English:
Literature
- History:
U.S. History, World History
- Mathematics:
Mathematics Level 1, Mathematics Level 2
- Science:
Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics
- Languages:
Chinese with Listening
French; French with Listening
German; German with Listening
Modern Hebrew
Italian
Japanese with Listening
Korean with Listening
Latin
Spanish; Spanish with Listening
Why should a student take an SAT Subject Test? If a student
is very strong in a particular subject, it is an additional opportunity to
highlight his achievement in that discipline beyond his high school
grades. These tests also provide
students with an excellent way to round out their college applications. Not all
schools offer AP classes in a discipline in which your student may excel, so
taking a relevant SAT Subject Test instead can demonstrate his or her depth of
knowledge in that subject. In addition
to their value in the college application process, Subject Tests can also help
with course selection and placement in college. In some cases, colleges allow
high-scoring students to skip certain introductory-level classes.
What is the cost? Compared to the cost of an AP exam, a
Subject Test seems like a downright bargain. The flat registration fee is $20
(that fee stays the same whether you take 1, 2, or 3 exams on test day), plus a
$9 fee per test. If you take a language test with listening, add an additional $20 to that test fee. So if you
take the Literature and World History Subject Tests on the same day, the total
fee will be $38. If you take Literature and Spanish with Listening, the total
fee will be $58. It is therefore more
economical to take multiple Subject Tests on the same day.
When should a student take an SAT Subject Test? It is
important to note that Subject Tests can not be taken on the same day as
the SAT, so factor that into your decision making about test dates. Up to 3
Subject Tests can be taken on the same day. Check the College Board website to see what
Subject Tests are being offered in your area.
Carefully consider the timing. Most students take them at the end of
junior year or at the beginning of senior year, but in some cases it might make
sense to take one earlier. If, for example, you take Biology in your sophomore
year, it's better to take the test at the end of sophomore year while the
material is still fresh in your mind. If your student plans to dedicate time to
studying for a Subject Test over the summer, then it is best to wait until the
fall. For those studying a foreign language, students should take the test as
late as possible, prior to college application deadlines of course, in order to
receive the most years of instruction in that language before being tested.
Some selective colleges either strongly recommend or require
Subject Tests as part of a student's application. Swarthmore College, for
example, strongly recommends that prospective engineers take the Mathematics
Level 2 Test; Dartmouth College requires 2 SAT Subject Tests in two different
subjects; Georgetown requires 3 SAT Subject Tests. Check with each college you
are applying to about their individual requirements. If you do not score well
on a Subject Test, the College Board now offers a service called "Score Choice"
which allows you to eliminate that score from the test report that the colleges
see. (Please note that not all colleges participate in "Score Choice," so
suppressing that low score may not always be an option!) Like the individual
sections of the SAT, Subject Tests are scored on a scale from 200-800 points.
Preparing for a Subject Test is important, even if a
student is already strong in that topic. For starters, the College Board website contains a breakdown of the material that is assessed on each Test. The 60-minute
French test, for example, is comprised of 85 questions that are divided thus:
30% vocabulary in context, 30-40% structure, and 30-40% reading comprehension.
In addition, for each Subject Test the College Board provides practice
questions and tips so that students can test their knowledge ahead of time and
familiarize themselves with the test format. The time constraints of the
Subject Tests can be challenging for some students, so it is important to
practice answering questions in a timed, test-like setting.

| A+ Teams up With New Jersey Y Camps for Summer 2010!
|
This summer A+ Test Prep and Tutoring is teaming up with New Jersey Y (NJY) Camps to provide 3 one-week PSAT preparation sessions at their teen camp location in Milford, PA. Each week of camp will focus on one of the three areas covered on the PSAT: math, reading, or writing skills. Students entering 10th and 11th grades have the option of participating in these courses. Our program is offered as one of NJY Camps' Total Specialty Camps (TSC). TSC camps are specialized programs offered in a variety of sports, arts, sciences, and specials (which include Scuba and our PSAT camp). Campers participating in the A+ PSAT camp will receive two 2-hour instructional sessions per day: one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon. For the rest of the day and evening campers will be able to participate in all of the normal camping activities. A camp daily schedule can be seen here. Featured Student:
Fred Kucherovsky
| A+ is very pleased to report that one of our SAT Prep
students, Fred Kucherovsky, recently received a score of 2130 out of a possible
2400 points on the March SAT. The breakdown of his scores was: Critical Reading
670, Math 740, Writing 720, with an essay score of 11 (out of a possible
12).
These impressive scores represent
an increase of almost 300 points from his October PSAT scores! Fred, who is a junior at Lower Moreland High School, was
tutored by verbal tutor Pam Milligan and by math tutor Barbara Lommer. Pam describes Fred as a delight to work with
and very hard-working; when he made a mistake on anything from grammar to
reading passages, he took the time to discuss the question with her and
understand what he did wrong so he would not make that same kind of mistake
again. Together they worked on improving Fred's vocabulary through flashcards
and the study of roots and prefixes. Another area of focus was essay writing
techniques. With practice, Fred learned to write longer, more detailed essays. Math was already a strength for Fred, but Barbara Lommer
helped him make fewer careless errors and showed him shorter ways of
calculating some problems that helped save him valuable time. Barbara describes Fred as "mature," open to feedback, and willing to put her advice and
tips into practice. This conscientious high schooler who is in all honors and AP
classes is even contemplating retaking the SAT in June to see if he can improve
his score! In the meantime, Fred is
still deciding what colleges to apply to, but NYU, Penn State, and Temple University
are strong contenders. He plans to study business or another area where he can
apply his math skills. In his spare
time, Fred, a self-described political "junkie," loves going to games of the
various Philly sports teams and enjoys rock music. Congratulations on a job well done!
