A+ Test Prep's First Counselor Select Scholarship Winner, Adam Powley

The Scholarship: Tests and the Rest Counselor Select Scholarship

Copy of PAYROLL

This past April, A+ Test Prep and Tutoring contacted high school counselors throughout Pennsylvania to ask them to select one college-bound senior graduating in 2020 for A+'s first annual $500 “Tests and the Rest Counselor Select Scholarship.” Counselors were free to select nominees for a variety of relevant reasons, such as a student's good character, hard work, financial need, and more.

Although A+ sponsored the scholarship, a service called TestBright created it. According to TestBright’s website, TestBright was “developed as a collaboration between veteran testing experts and school counselors” in order to serve as a “resource that empowers parents and school counselors to best support and encourage all high school students with expert navigation through the forever changing obstacle course of college admission testing.” The name of the scholarship, “Tests and the Rest,” comes from the title of TestBright's podcast.

Once a counselor selects a candidate, the student needs to complete the application, which involves listing awards and achievements, citing work and volunteer experiences, reporting grades, and sharing a 500 word response to the essay prompt “What has the college admissions process taught me about myself?” A recommendation letter from the student's counselor is the final component of the application.

In May, Monica Matthews, author of How to Win College Scholarships began evaluating applications, and by June a winner was selected for each state. So, who was the deserving Pennsylvania senior who won A+ Test Prep and Tutoring's first annual sponsored “Tests and the Rest Counselor Select Scholarship?”

The Winner: Adam Powley

Among the many students who applied across Pennsylvania, Adam Powley stood out as uniquely qualified to receive the $500 “Tests and the Rest Counselor Select Scholarship” from A+ in recognition of his inquisitive, enthusiastic, and flexible approach to learning.

Adam attends Friends Select School in Philadelphia where he has earned impressive grades and key leadership positions in classes and activities. A closer look at his efforts in and out of the classroom reveal a hardworking student with a range of talents and interests. Whether he is dealing with musical notes, Latin grammar, or mathematical equations, Adam approaches his academics with an earnestness that has produced honor roll recognition and inspired his future college and career pursuits. When he’s not acing his classes, he’s scoring aces on the tennis court and protecting both the swimmers at a local pool as a lifeguard and the planet as leader of his school’s Environmentalism and Sustainability Club.

Adam's nominating counselor, Tracy Matthews, adds that Adam is an “astute, insightful, and reflective student” who is “committed to growing and improving as a learner”—all qualities Adam demonstrated in his approach to the college admissions process. In his winning essay, Adam describes how the process of dreaming of going to the likes of MIT, yet ultimately accepting University of Pittsburgh’s offer to attend its campus, gave him a deeper appreciation for his own educational journey. As he describes it, getting to achieve his dreams of an education that will allow him to pursue his interests and help him “be who I want to be” is what matters most.

As a result of this positive attitude and his numerous accomplishments, A+ is proud to have Adam Powley as its first “Tests and the Rest” scholarship recipient. His win also highlights not only the value of smaller scholarships, but also the value of a broader outlook in one’s approach to affording and selecting colleges, both of which will be covered in Parts 2 and 3 of the “A+ Scholarship Series.”
