For juniors, the end of the school year brings a perfect storm of tests, deadlines, and a million college-related to-do’s. If you’re seeing your kid stressed out and exhausted, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: with a little help, your teen can shake off the junioritis blues, power through the final months, and finish the year with confidence. So, buckle up—because we’re about to dive into how you, as a parent, can be the superhero your teen needs to get them through this tough season of their academic life!

What is Burnout, Anyway?

Burnout isn’t just something that happens when you run out of your favorite snack during a study session. It’s a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by chronic stress. For high school juniors, burnout can happen for a variety of reasons: taking tough AP classes, cramming for the SAT/ACT, worrying about college applications, and trying to keep up with a social life (remember that?). Imagine trying to juggle five flaming torches while riding a unicycle on a tightrope—and you’ll have a pretty good idea of how burnout feels.

Spot the Signs of Burnout

When academic and extracurricular demands pile up, it can leave your student feeling physically drained, mentally fried, and emotionally all over the place. When burnout rears its ugly head, it’s usually pretty easy to spot. Sure, some days are more stressful than others, but when your teen is in full-blown burnout mode, things start to shift. Here’s what to watch for:

  • School struggles:  If your once-motivated teen is now losing interest in classes, skipping assignments, more frequently absent, or having a meltdown over a simple project, burnout could be at play.
  • Future Fog: Your teen may feel unsure about making important decisions about college and may be questioning whether they’re prepared for what’s next.
  • Mood swings and irritability: The pressure can cause your teen to snap or cry at the smallest things. It’s not personal—they’re just feeling overwhelmed. They may also be doubling down on bad habits to cope with stress.
  • Physical exhaustion: If they’re constantly yawning, complaining about headaches or tummy trouble, or can’t get a good night’s sleep, burnout is taking its toll.
  • Withdrawal from activities: A kid who’s suddenly uninterested in hanging out with friends or doing things they used to love? Yep, burnout can do that.

And if it’s really bad, burnout might even affect their self-esteem or lead to anxiety and depression. If you see more serious signs, like self-harm or thoughts of quitting, it’s time to get professional help fast. No shame in that—getting help is part of the battle!

How Can You Help Your Teen Beat Junioritis?

The answer is simpler than it seems—provide support, reduce the pressure, and make sure they’re balancing work with play. Here’s how to tackle it:

  • Help Them Set Realistic Goals. Encourage your teen to set priorities for the end of the year, so they can focus on what really matters to them and say goodbye to any activities that are adding to their stress. If something isn’t essential to their academic or personal growth right now, it’s okay to let it go for a bit!
  • Create a Balanced Schedule. The key to avoiding burnout is balance. Help your teen carve out time for schoolwork, but also for relaxation, hobbies, and yes, even socializing! Encourage them to ask for help if they’re falling behind—whether it’s through tutoring, study groups, or extra support from their teachers.
  • Emphasize Emotional Health. Academic stress is real, but so is emotional well-being. Remind your teen to take breaks, sleep well, and make time for activities that recharge their batteries—whether it’s a walk, a Netflix binge, or hanging out with friends. Good mental health will help them power through the toughest moments of junioritis.
  • Encourage Healthy Habits. Sleep is non-negotiable. Teens need 8-10 hours a night to stay sharp, so help them stick to a bedtime routine that helps them unwind. And don’t forget nutrition! A healthy, balanced diet will give them the energy to tackle the day’s challenges. Sleep + food = stress-fighting superpowers.
  • Know when to take a step back. If it all feels like too much, suggest your teen temporarily step away from certain commitments to give themselves time to reset and recharge. A little space is a perfect way to gain some perspective and make any remaining responsibilities easier to handle.
  • Be Their Biggest Cheerleader. Above all, let your teen know they’re not in this alone. Offer a listening ear, give words of encouragement, and remind them that you believe in their ability to succeed—even if they’re feeling down. When they’re ready to talk, be there without judgment. Sometimes, just knowing someone’s got your back can make all the difference.
