Number of Test Optional Colleges Continues to Increase

A recent post in the New York Times‘ The Choice blog entitled Getting In Without the SAT, reports that the number of colleges accepting applications without standardized test scores, such as SAT and ACT scores, is increasing.

According to Fairtest.org, about one-fourth of US colleges now offer the option of applying without standardized test scores. However, not all “test-optional” colleges have the same policy regarding standardized testing, so it is very important to review each college’s policy individually.

For example, Hobart and Williams Smith Colleges, in Geneva, NY, test-optional liberal arts colleges in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, have the following caveat listed in their admissions information:

*For those applying for the Trustee and/or Blackwell Medical Scholarship Programs, submission of standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) is required. In addition, standardized test scores are required for those applicants who attend a school (or are home schooled) that does not provide a traditional transcript. If English is not your native language, we require submission of either the TOEFL or IELTS scores.

The more information you have about the admissions process at specific schools you are interested in, the better. And of course, it is best to plan early so you can make the right choices about whether to prepare for college admissions tests, and if so, which tests to prepare for.

   We chose A+ for Preparation to help our daughter prepare for college entrance exams. May daughter had Pam for the verbal portion of the exam. Pam was amazing! She asked about extra-curricular activities and demonstrated genuine interest in my daughter's role as a student in and outside of the classroom. Pam also noted how important these activities are to colleges. John was the tutor for math and science. He helped my daughter feel comfortable and confident in her skills.
